Gino Stephano Michaels
Gino Stephano Michaels is a South African criminologist, intelligence analyst, researcher, and author — whose work sits at the intersection of faith, justice, identity, and systemic change.
His academic journey began with a BA and BA Honours in Psychology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). His Honours dissertation focused on a systematic review of health behaviour change interventions targeting young adults — drawing on advanced training in Abnormal Psychology, Psychological Interventions, Quantitative Research Methods, Community Psychology, and Psychological Assessments.
That pursuit evolved into an MPhil in Criminology, Law, and Society at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where his dissertation — "This Pen is More Important Than This Firearm": Exploring Security Sector Governance in South Africa During the COVID-19 Pandemic — examined how militarised policing, contested governance, and structural inequality intersected during a state of national exception. Supervised by Prof. Irvin Kinnes and Prof. Elrena van der Spuy at UCT's Department of Public Law, the research drew directly on semi-structured interviews with members of the South African Police Service — producing findings that speak to policing, Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, community resilience, and the governance failures that reproduce violence in South Africa's most marginalised communities.
His professional career began as a Research Assistant in the Department of Psychology at UWC, where he supported post-doctoral research by developing educational modules for community workshops with rural families and translating research findings into practical, community-centred resources. He subsequently served as a Research Assistant at UCT's Centre of Criminology, contributing to post-doctoral research on the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into corruption and state capture in South Africa.
He then joined the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) as a Lead Research Analyst, specialising in OSINT-driven risk intelligence and AML/KYC compliance — delivering cross-jurisdictional investigations across financial crime, organised crime, cybercrime, terrorism and extremism, sanctions, PEPs, and regulatory and compliance violations. He subsequently served as a GSOC Analyst at Crisis24, providing real-time threat intelligence and head-of-state level security consultancy for some of the world's most influential organisations and individuals.
He is a certified FEMA emergency management professional (NIMS IS-700, ICS-200, ICS-100), a lifelong member of the Golden Key International Honours Society, and Co-Founder of the UCT Criminology Student Collective.
He is the Founder and Director of Goby.Editz — and the author of Revenge To Reckoning, a neurodivergent, transdisciplinary manifesto blending faith, mental health advocacy, political commentary, criminology, poetry, and South African cultural identity across twelve distinct chapters.
He is currently developing a triptych doctoral research initiative at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) — three interrelated PhDs forming a single, integrated interdisciplinary system, each distinct yet sharing a unified epistemological stance, methodological backbone, and ethical framework.
Lastly, he has always been obsessed with legacy — because, in the end, it is the clearest measure of what the Noble Crowned Son of One Who Is Like God stood for.
